Laura Murphy of St. Charles, IL began her career as a Technical Writer, working for a software company located in Chicago. She loved her job, as she was able to telecommute, affording her the flexibility to spend more time with her daughters.
“As a single mom, I was lucky to have this job that allowed me to be with my daughters during the times they weren’t at school. I had a lot of flexibility in my schedule and I was paid pretty well for my work. I wrote technical manuals for a company in Chicago and I really had a knack for the writing. At first, it was a challenge, but eventually, I found myself wanting to do more with my life.”
After Laura Murphy of St. Charles, IL began to research new career possibilities, she decided that nursing was a great option and began to pursue her degree at nearby St. Charles Community College. “Because I had been doing technical writing for such a long time, I was able to keep this job, while also going to school. It really worked out well for my girls and I to have the stable income, while I worked towards my degree in nursing.”
After three years at St. Charles Community College, Laura Murphy of St. Charles, IL received her Associates degree in Nursing and began working at St. Charles General Hospital. “I really am thankful for my career in technical writing because that’s what really paved the way to my ultimate goal--my new job as an RN,” said Laura Murphy.
